CASTLETON RIDE OUT

or

LEADER WITHOUT A CLUE

This route was planned a few weeks ago but was called off because of the rain, but on Sunday it really was SUNday so off we went. Ten bikes  (even Andy was convinced that no spot of rain would fall on his bike)  left Toby at 10-30am and made their way to the Peak District.

The second man rule, and the leader's (me) map reading skills, worked well through the islands at Macclesfield and onto the 5470 and the 624 for Glossop where we made our first stop, at the burger van on the high peaks, for a drink. Of course people then wanted the loo and being informed by Bob there was one in Glossop we headed for that.

Unfortunately I was that busy looking for the WC sign that I missed the right hand turn for Sheffield sign so when we set off again I carried straight on. When I realised there was no-one behind me, and I had reached the Glossop sign board, I knew I had gone wrong so I sat and waited to be rescued. Sure enough very black knight (Hubby) turned up and with a few choice words I was herded back to the head of the pack.

We then rode down the scenic Snake pass and over the reservoir into Castleton without incident, where we stopped for lunch (chippy). Return trip, past the Blue John mines, I thought would be easy so didn't plan a route, but signpost people once again let me down and at the first crossroads, no Glossop sign, this time I heard Andy (son in law) shout "turn LEFT" (and probably adding " idiot " under his breath) so off we went again.

Once clear of Macclesfield on the way home, and needing a cool drink, I started looking for a pub and as I pulled onto the car park I was hit by the familiar smell of hot engine oil. There, on the car park, were four huge steam engines, Bonus or what ???.

It appeared they were having a ride out themselves to meet up for a drink as it was someone's birthday.

I hope everyone enjoyed the ride out, I did, despite some wrong turns, as the weather was glorious and the company friendly and amusing, and when I do another one I MIGHT know the way ( but I wouldn't rely on it) and I can always depend on backseat bosses.

 See you then
