LLangollen Canal Trip

13th June 2010

With an "Avast ye Hearties" and "Hoist the main sail" (well, at least the Pirate flag that Big John had brought) WMCC once again took to the canals of Llangollen, this time dressed as pirates, to terrorise the locals (and, at times, terrify themselves).

The weather was overcast with a slight drizzle, but quite warm, as we set off  but as we emerged from the first long tunnel the rain stopped and we had a good day weatherwise until the last half hour of the return journey.

This year we had three boats on the go filled with 28 assorted members and friends.

Captain Bob had Big John and Mark on his boat, both armed with water pistols, and of course we had a running battle all day, as we swapped positions, with everyone getting squirted at one point or another.

Captain Les had Andy on the tiller, who hadn't told anyone that he was an expert on steering, as his parents had a boat for years, so managed to win a £5 bet off REX for being able to keep the boat straight and not bumping the sides whilst going over the aqueduct. (did return the money though).

Captain Mo had a former member of the moped racing team ( who's only idea of movement was fast forward and full throttle) onboard. As this was combined with a complete lack of steering knowledge it caused some hair-raising moments and a couple of fast crashes one of which nearly DROWNED everyone in our boat. We did all survive it, you will be glad to know, with nothing worse than a bit of a scratch on the boat's paintwork.

We all stopped for lunch in glorious sunshine, and a group picture, at the docking point halfway through the day then turned around and made our way back.

Some of us then retired to the Telford pub to finish of the day with a drink and dinner.

As we were waiting for all of our party to gather on the docks, the group of people who had taken out another day boat got back, they asked where all the pirates had gone, and seemed surprised to see our boats safely docked as they thought we may have capsized somewhere along the canal, and seeing some of the erratic steering going on (it's really hard if you haven't done it before) who could blame them ???????.

We think it is a different and enjoyable day out and hope everyone who turned up thought so too.

So, until next time, keep the Jolly Roger flying, and thanks to everyone for coming along and making it a good day.

 See you soon
